LEGO Racing Challenge

Build · Code · Race

Build a LEGO car, program its micro:bit and race it. For everyone from 9 to 99.

The cars, step by step Winter races Phone joystick

Three cars for the challenge

Every car is LEGO bricks on a board with a micro:bit. Turn it in 3D, build it step by step and get its parts list; one joystick drives them all.

Wukong mecanum racer

Mecanum wheels on an ElecFreaks Wukong board: it drives, spins on the spot and, with the phone's second stick, slides sideways.

3D model and steps

Building:bit tank

Tracks on a Yahboom Building:bit board: it turns by driving one track against the other and climbs where wheels slip.

Steering car

Steers like a real car: a servo turns the front wheels, two motors drive the rear ones. The further you push, the more it turns.

Three disciplines

Hill climb

A ramp 1 metre long. The machine that climbs the steepest slope wins.

Sprint

3 metres straight. The best time wins.

Race

3 laps of the track. First across the line wins.

Winter races at Central Camp

Three Sundays in December, 14:00 to 17:00 each time, at Central Camp, Prague:

  • Sunday 6 December 2026
  • Sunday 13 December 2026
  • Sunday 20 December 2026

Three sessions, three machines: each one is built, programmed and then raced. The rules are short: drive with the micro:bit joystick and use the car modules we hand out. Everything else is up to you.

How to start

  1. Build your car: 3D models and building steps, a parts list for each and a file for BrickLink Studio.
  2. Program it in our MakeCode editor: the LEGO Racing Challenge row on its home page has the joystick and every car, for radio and for Bluetooth.
  3. Drive it with the Yahboom GHBit joystick, or from a phone at makecode-microbit.geekedu.eu/joystick (Chrome on Android, Bluefy on iPhone). The further you push, the faster it goes.
  4. Race: hill climb, sprint and three laps.

Step-by-step activities for classes and clubs are in the LEGO racing unit on GeekEdu.

Where to buy the parts

The electronics and kits we race with are sold by the Czech shop HWKitchen:

The Yahboom GHBit joystick board comes from Yahboom. LEGO bricks for your own changes: BrickLink, with each model's parts list.
